From KK to Ecco: Standing Together to Save a Best Friend
If you’ve been following our journey here at Hatcher’s, you know how much our sweet black cat, KK, meant to us. We brought him home when he was just a tiny, pocket-sized kitten, and he grew into so much more than just a pet—he was family. Losing him was incredibly hard. (If you haven't read KK's story yet, you can find that post on our blog—it's a special one).
But today, we want to talk about another sweet black cat who needs our help: Ecco.
If you’ve been following Stephen’s story lately, you know how much Ecco means to him and his wife, Sarah. They’ve had her since she was just an eight-week-old kitten, and she quickly became their absolute best friend. She’s gentle, incredibly loving, and the heart of their home.
But recently, their world was turned upside down.
A Heartbreaking Diagnosis
A few weeks ago, they noticed Ecco wasn't doing well. After a visit to the vet, they received devastating news: Ecco has cancer in her back left femur. Hearing a diagnosis like that is heartbreaking, and the stress and worry can feel completely overwhelming. Having gone through a very similar, scary health scare with KK about ten years ago, I know exactly how heavy that weight feels.
Stephen and Sarah immediately faced a terrifying waiting period. Before they could even think about treatment, Ecco needed urgent chest x-rays and ultrasounds to see if the cancer had spread through her body. If it had, their options would be incredibly limited.
While they waited for those results, they launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the mounting vet bills. The response from the community was immediate, and the relief of knowing they weren't in this alone helped keep them going through some very dark days.
The Big News: A Fighting Chance
This week, they finally got the call with her scan results, and it was the absolute best news we could have hoped for:
The cancer has not spread.
Knowing that the cancer is still localized to her leg changes everything. It means Ecco has a real, fighting chance.
The Road Ahead
To completely remove the cancer and give Ecco a long, comfortable, and happy life, she needs to have her leg amputated. It is a major, urgent surgery, but it is the definitive path to curing her.
Stephen and Sarah are incredibly grateful to everyone who has donated, shared their updates, and kept Ecco in their thoughts. You helped them get through the critical scanning phase, and now they are focusing all of their energy on getting her through this life-saving surgery.
They still have a little way to go to cover the cost of the amputation and her post-op recovery. If you are able to donate—even just $1.00—or share her story with other animal lovers, it would mean the world to their family. Surgery is scheduled for Thursday August 27th
